Thank-you for taking a moment to consider the Pavilion as your all-sports destination. Our first goal in sports is having fun! The Pavilion is a multi-purpose building with the ability to host many different types of sports & events. To accomplish this we have two indoor surfaces which are stacked on top of each other (smooth surface & turf) and we alternate these surfaces seasonally at various times of the year. These surfaces inside the large Pavilion are located inside of a hockey rink wall system (dasher boards) with plexiglass upper sections and then the field is netted (1 ¾” grid) above that. So our facility is one-field with a size of 80 ft. wide x 180 ft. in length and as such provides about 14,400 sq. ft. of playing surface. There are also two player boxes, 2 penalty benches, a scorers area, locker rooms, party rooms and a mezzanine spectator viewing area. Attached to the large Pavilion on the east side is the support building containing offices, restrooms, showers, food service/vending areas, lounge seating areas with TV/internet, arcades, etc. Upon your arrival to the Pavilion you may park near the front of the building if there is room or go around to the rear entrance to our ample paved and lighted parking lots.
From January through April the base surface (laid on top of concrete floor) is exposed which is our synthetic artificial turf. During this season we offer mostly turf-oriented sports. Our artificial turf surface is one of the highest quality infill turf systems offered today- Fieldturf- ProSeries. It consists of a 2 “ tall blade of synthetic grass and then the whole field is “infilled” with almost 10 lbs/sq. ft. of a sand (7 lbs) /granulated cryogenic rubber mix (3 lbs). It is definitely not the old “Astroturf” you may be familiar with which is more like a carpet surface. Our turf looks like grass, feels like grass and most importantly plays like grass. It’s very easy on you when you slide on it and also is documented to provide a less injury-prone surface for the athlete. It’s the same turf surface the Detroit Lions play on in Ford Fieldhouse! It has been selected as the turf field of choice by the U.S. Soccer Foundation and FIFA and is clearly the “Choice of the Pros”. Our field is marked (inlaid colored lines) for indoor soccer and flag football (in-bounds field size- 75 ft. wide x 150 ft. in length). The soccer goals are 14 ft. wide x 8 ft. in height and extend outside of the dasher board system. We also groom our turf surface every so often to keep a smooth and uniform playing surface.
Turf Footwear - For our turf sports you may wear either a good athletic shoe or also a shoe with a low profile soft molded spike (no metal cleats permitted).
SportCourt Footwear - Skates- we prefer you use in-line skates set-up with high quality inside wheels, not those that have been used outside on the streets. You’ll find they roll smoother and also they won’t mark-up our floor! There should not be brakes on the skates or they must be removed prior to skating at the Pavilion. Basketball and volleyball players should wear high quality sports shoes with traction soles (not smooth).
From May through December the turf is covered with our smooth surface flooring, which is a modular interlocking sport tile surface called SportCourt. It is also one of the highest quality athletic sport floors on the market today. Our SportCourt surface is their “ATAK” tile surface (light blue color) which is the best suited to ball sports and in-line hockey. It offers an excellent co-efficient of friction, less skate vibration and less puck chatter than other floors on the market. We chose it for our players- who today demand the best surface possible. We’ve been told our floor is the best of the 3 recognized West Michigan area rinks. The rink size is 80 ft. x 180 ft. and is of the size and standard as sanctioned by USA Hockey InLine. Our court is marked out (painted red lines) for in-line hockey, basketball and 2 volleyball courts. All our goal nets (hockey, soccer, lacrosse) are appropriate regulation size for indoor play.
We have 4 portable Porter professional quality basketball hoops and have Schelde professional quality (Collegiate 4000 series) volleyball equipment (2 inside courts and 2 sand courts outside). We can set up 2 professional quality volleyball courts down the middle of our inside surface with some side courts as well. Ceiling height at the volleyball nets will then be 45 ft. in height. We can set one full-sized basketball court or two @ 75 ft. in length or 8 Gus Macker 3 on 3 sized courts. You come up with the court configuration you desire for your sports event and we’ll do our best to provide it.
We have 2 team player boxes with direct access to the playing surface and also from outside the rink. The penalty boxes are located at the end of the player boxes and the scorer keeper’s station is between them elevated for a good view of the playing surface. We run two large Nevco scoreboards to keep track of game statistics.
Our spectator seating consists of two areas. The main area is an elevated mezzanine area with two bleachers and various tables & chairs capable of seating upwards of 250 people. This elevated area gives spectators an excellent view of the field and also is protected with netting. There is also spectator viewing available below the mezzanine “rinkside” with bar stools & tables. Handicap viewing is also available.
We use radiant tube heaters in combination with a large forced air exchanger to provide an acceptable playing environment year-round. In the winter the tube heaters actually warm the surfaces and objects below them and not all the air space in the building. As such the players feel warm but yet it’s a cooler comfortable playing environment without that hot, stuffy, sweaty sports facility smell. In the summer the Pavilion playing area is not air conditioned but we employ lots of fans to circulate the air- 4 high ceiling; 20 more running the length of the field both sides; 2 each at the goalie areas and one directed at the team bench areas. These assist in moving the cooler nighttime air which we bring into the building.
Our playing surface lighting is second to none. We employ the use of 1000 watt indirect metal halide lights. They illuminate the facility from ceiling to floor and eliminate annoying glares, hot spots, shadows and creates an exceptional player and spectator environment. The light actually is directed up to the white ceiling and then reflects back down into the facility. You can look upward at the ball coming to you and not be blinded!
The locker rooms are located underneath the mezzanine spectator seating area. There are 4 themed rooms (2 teams on-field, 2 getting ready). These rooms are air conditioned for your comfort; have exhaust fans for ventilation so there isn’t that “locker room smell” and smooth rubber floors so you won’t get cold feet. There is a caged equipment room where the house sports equipment is kept (balls, hockey goalie equipment, sports training gear). We also have a party room available for rent to host that special team party or a sports themed Birthday party.
Attached to the main Pavilion sports building is the 3600 sq. ft. support building containing the main counter, offices, restrooms (5 male, 7 female), showers (unisex), food service/vending areas, arcade, lounge seating with big screen TV viewing and internet access. Bring your laptop- We are a wireless access facility (even in the bleachers). Our vending area has the typical soda’s, sports drinks, candy/health bars and other items. Our food service usually runs on the league nights and offers pizza, pretzels, nachos, hot dogs, etc.
As explained and illustrated on the Pavilion Events web pages in greater detail, the interior of the Pavilion can also be converted when desired into an events hall.
This occurs during the time when the smooth surface is down from May through December. Table and chairs are brought out and the caterer is called to bring in the meal. If you’re looking for a spot to hold your next sports oriented banquet or end-of-season party let us assist you in turning the Pavilion into the facility that can do it all for you.
This is a view of the two professional quality sand volleyball courts at the Pavilion. We usually have summer and fall co-ed leagues and the courts are available to use for free on a first come basis if not reserved. Many of our event parties like company picnics and family reunions use the courts. Next to the courts is a small outside play area for children.
Our facility also offers an assortment of other games for your to enjoy, such as arcade games, foosball, air hockey, backgammon, table hockey, darts, ping pong, cards, checkers, and chess.
This completes your tour of the Pavilion Sports facility.
