One of the fastest-growing sports in the world, especially North America, is Inline Hockey. Don’t let yourself be fooled. This isn’t smacking a ball around a parking lot. This sport is modeled very closely to ice hockey. Played on a 180’ x 80’ rink, it sometimes appears that you are watching an actual ice hockey game. One difference is the speed of the game. Play is 4-on-4, and in inline hockey, there are no off-sides or icing. This creates many scoring chances. It is not uncommon for a goalie in inline hockey to face 40-50 shots. An actual roller puck is used, which is similar is size and weight of an ice hockey puck. If you are either new to the game of hockey, or an ice hockey player, try inline. You will see the similarities as well as the fun the difference of the game makes.
Our hockey games are played on SportCourt. This is a floating tile floor that is very fast to skate on and allows the puck to glide smoothly across. By being a “floating” floor, it is much softer than other types of flooring when you fall. This cuts down on injuries and makes it much nicer for novice players who are still getting used to skating and playing the game. Our facility is surrounded by boards and glass, so strategies used in ice hockey can still be maintained while playing inline. We use a regulation size net (4’x 6’), and goalies wear full gear. Skaters can use the same gear they would use in ice hockey except for of course, the skates. Actual roller hockey skates are recommended, but any inline skate may be used. Skates with bearings of an ABEC 5 or better are recommended.
Our first league will begin mid-April. We are going back to our previos format. You can either bring in a whole or partial team. This league will last 10 games, plus playoffs. All teams will make the playoffs regardless of their regular season performance. If time permits, we will also have a summer/fall league. In between the two leagues, we will continue to have our skills competition and an All- Star game. At Pavilion Sports, we want the players to be involved with how we run the leagues. Our priority is giving players a league and a facility that are enjoyable to play in.
Our "hockey" season begins the first week of April and runs through the end of October. League play will start the second or third week of April and drop ins will begin the second week in April. In addition to our hockey league, Pavilion Sports will host hockey "drop-ins", where the format is basically just come and play some pick-up hockey. Drop-ins are welcome to anyone. Come back soon for more information on the leagues and drop ins.
